                HOUSE BREAKING YOUR NEW PUPPY

HOUSE BREAKING
It's always best to start potty training your puppy early. However, the puppy
won't really start picking it up until your puppy is about 12 to 16 weeks old so
be patient with him or her.

Be sure to pick out a good spot outside in the back yard, preferably a small
lawn area. Take your dog on a leash and go to the same spot every time. The
smell of the urine from his or her previous efforts will encourage her to go
again in the same spot. When a dog is sniffing for a good spot they are really
sniffing for the same spot they went before. Do not clean up the old poop at
this spot until the dog is completely potty trained.

Teach your puppy words for relieving themselves like
"Go Potty", "Go Poop", "Bathroom".

Use one of these phrases repeatedly as you try to get him or her to go, then
praise her enthusiastically when he or she actually does it.

Be sure to COMPLETELY clean up any potty accidents in the house. The smell
of urine in the carpet will encourage her to go there again, so you must
remove the smell entirely. And remember that a dog's sense of smell is much
stronger than ours... so don't think running a damp towel over it is going to
do the trick, you are mistaken. A Carpet Cleaning Machine is a good
investment.

At night, place the dog in a kennel for the size of your dog.  A dog will NOT
pee or poop in their own bed if they can possibly help it. But if the kennel is
too big for the dog they will sleep in one corner and pee and poop in the other.
So make sure the kennel fits the size of the dog. If the kennel is too large at
first you may want to put a box inside the kennel to make it smaller, until the
puppy is bigger. If you use a box be sure that the box is tall enough to keep
the dog in. Take the dog outside to pee or poop FIRST THING IN THE
MORNING. If the dog has an accident on their bed by the time you get there,
you'll know the dog could not hold it all night. The following evening, wake in
the middle of the night and take the dog out for a potty break. You may not
have to do this forever, so try again in a week or two.
The best thing is to make sure there is always a way for the dog to get
outside. You may want to install a doggy door. Some dogs will not alert you
when he or she wants to go outside. If it is impossible to provide a way for the
dog to get outside without your help, you may want to hang a small bell next
to your door for your puppy to play with to help alert you.

Whenever your puppy cries or whines, assume she has to go potty! You
should also assume your puppy needs to go potty immediately. They may need
to go potty after he or she wakes up from a nap. You should stop water intake
a few hours before bed time.

Praise the dog when it poops or pees in the right spot. As with any training,
do not ever hit the dog. You want her to be your friend.

Remember when taking the dog outside for a pee or poop, use a leash. You'll
be able to control the dog better, and keep it from fooling around when there's
business to be done.

At first, do not let your puppy have run of the whole house, keep your pup in a
more limited area like the kitchen or laundry room. When your puppy has
proven himself or herself then let it have more area of the house.
