| | shapes his future personality and how he will react to things in his environment as an adult dog. Gently expose him to a wide variety of people, children, places, riding in a car, walking on a leash. These situations make a huge, permanent difference. Proper socialization can prevent a dog from being always fearful of a situation or of people. It will help them develop into a well-mannered, happy companion dog.
POISONS There are many household items and foods that can be dangerous for your puppy. Use care to protect him or her. Foods: chocolate (darker the chocolate more toxic for the dog), coffee beans, large amount of grapes, raisins, onion, broccoli, garlic in large amounts, castor bean, any kind of large fruit seed or pit. Nutmeg, sugarless candies and many other possible foods. Plants: aloe vera, asparagus, fern, azalea, cactus, daffodil, elephant’s ear, ficus, foxglove, holly, honeysuckle, morning glory flower, tulip bulbs, wild mushrooms and many others possible plants. Household: Any amount of antifreeze, any household cleaners, drain openers, mothballs, rodent poisons, sun screen, fireworks, your personal prescription drugs (if one falls on the floor pick it up so your dog doesn't eat it), supplements, multivitamins (especially with iron), batteries, any auto fluids, gasoline and many other possible household items. Unfortunately there are people in the world who do not like dogs, so be sure you examine your yard to see if there is anything that may harm your pet before letting your dog outside. Never give your dog any pork or chicken or cooked bones that will split. They can choke on them or cause damage in their mouth and intestines. You can buy simulated bones at the store for your dog.
EMBARRASSING PEE INCIDENT Some dogs, no matter how well housebroken, suffer from what is called “submissive urination.” This embarrassing problem, for man and dog, usually occurs when you come home, and the dog, so happy to see him or her, pees a bit on the floor. When confronted with this problem, it’s important for the owners to realize that the dog has not forgotten his hard-learned house breaking lessons. Owners should NOT get angry, yell, finger-point or chasten their dog. This only ensures that the dog will try even harder to appease them, and as pee is the only gift the pup has to give, the problem continues. So what do you do? When you enter the house, ignore the dog for a few minutes, give the pup some time to cool down and greet you in a more “appropriate” way.
BITING & NIPPING If your puppy bites (nips) and chews on you with his or her sharp little teeth, gently hold his snout and growl at him in a firm voice. Make sure the pup knows you are not playing. Do this every time they start to bite. Everyone must do the same thing. You can't let him bite sometimes and be upset that he hurt you later. Also, give him a stiff stuffed toy to chew on because he is teething. You can dip an old wash cloth in chicken or beef bouillon. Let it dry and then roll it up and tie it in a knot. He will love to chew on it.
START RIGHT FROM THE START If you do not want your dog to get up on the couch, bed or table, then do not allow him to do it from the first day you bring him home.
WHO'S THE BOSS When playing tug of war with your puppy or dog, it is ok to let the dog win sometimes. However, on the last game of tug of war be sure that you are the winner. You are the boss.
NAMING YOUR PUPPY Names should be short. A two-syllable name is best because it's brief and won't be confused with one- syllable commands such as "No" or "Sit". Be consistent. All family members should use the same name. Don't use confusing nicknames for variations.

SAY "NO" WITHOUT USING THE DOGS NAME When you are correcting your dog be sure you NEVER use the dog's name. You should ONLY use the dogs name when your are praising or when you want the dog to come to you. If you say "NO and the dogs Name together" your dog will run from you when you call him or her.
BREAKABLES & CORDS Store breakable items safely out of the way. Hide or cover electrical cords so he won't chew on them.
REDUCING STRESS FOR YOUR DOG Research has shown that playing soft music, like (Handel's Water Music or soft children's lullabies, ocean sounds, heart beating sounds) will help to calm your dog. It will help to reduce separation anxiety, stops or decreases barking, consoles whimpering puppies, comforts sick or hurt dogs, settles hyperactivity. Playing this type of music while you are away is great for your dog.
WARNING: Little children "toddlers" playing around a 5 gal. plastic buckets, can get stuck and drown in them if there is water in them. Likewise, puppies that drink out of large containers like ice cream buckets or coffee cans can also drown in them. Be sure the water container is small enough so a puppy can get out of it.
COLD WEATHER Wind chill can threaten a pet's life, no matter what the temperature. Protect outdoor dogs with a dry, draft- free doghouse, big enough to let the dog sit and lie down comfortably, but small enough to hold in its body heat. The floor should be several inches above the ground and covered with loose insulating material such as straw or shredded newspaper. Keep it dry. Turn the doorway away from the wind and cover it with a flap of heavy waterproof fabric.
Pets that are outside a lot need more food in winter because keeping warm uses up their energy.

I RECEIVED THIS E-MAIL AND CRIED MY EYES OUT, THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE IT WITH YOU.
This is one of the kindest things I've ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent it, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service.
Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:
Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her. You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith.
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith , ' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.
By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.
Love, God
